Welcome to All Thangs Chemistry

Hey students and teachers! I know Chemistry can be a pretty tough subject to master, so here's hoping I can help with my little blog posts.

Here at All Thangs Chem, I hope that you derive joy from reading two chapters:

  • Chemistry concepts – difficult concepts that are broken down into simpler terms, with analogies and reduced jargon. May this make your studying a little less painful!

  • Chemistry stories – when chem gets a little dry, check out this page! You might discover fascinating bits of Chemistry in other subjects, such as geography, history, social sciences, and even in pop culture! Things get a little more interesting when we see how the different subjects we study are intertwined.

A wee bit about myself

Hey y'all, I'm Ms. Thang, a high school Chemistry teacher attempting to impart knowledge to 17-18 year olds in Raffles Institution, Singapore. I graduated with a BSc from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and a M.S. from Cornell University.

In my free time, I'm busy jamming out tunes on my piano or saxophone, or joining my football girls for an 11-aside game. As someone who loves reading trivia about the Vietnam War, determinism, music theories or gene-editing technologies such as CRISPR, I couldn't let up on an opportunity to write an interdisciplinary blog.

As musician-comedian Tim Minchin once said, "Please don’t make the mistake of thinking the arts and sciences are at odds with one another. That is a recent, stupid, and damaging idea. You don’t have to be unscientific to make beautiful art, to write beautiful things. If you need proof: Twain, Adams, Vonnegut, McEwen, Sagan, Shakespeare, Dickens. For a start.

You don’t need to be superstitious to be a poet. You don’t need to hate GM technology to care about the beauty of the planet. You don’t have to claim a soul to promote compassion."

While I certainly don't claim to be a polymath, I hope that this blog inspires more students to learn for the joy of learning, regardless of discipline :)
